Selama ini terdapat hal-hal yang keliru mencakup pemakaian kata pemimpin, pendidik, beda manajemen dengan administrasi, pengawas, supervisor.
Dalam UU Sisdiknas dan Peraturan Pemerintah tentang Standar Nasional Pendidikan tidak ada penjelasan mengenai kata pemimpin atau pimpinan sekolah, universitas, fakultas, disertai pemakaian atribut tersebut yang menggantikan predikat kepala sekolah, dekan, atau rektor sebagai pejabat tertinggi pada suatu instansi dalam pasal-pasalnya. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa secara perundang-undangan pun tidak dapat dibenarkan pemakaian kata Pemimpin sekolah, pemimpin fakultas, pimpinan universitas sebagai pengganti istilah kepala sekolah, dekan, maupun rektor dalam sebutan sehari-hari.
Pemimpin menurut kamus berarti upaya mempengaruhi para bawahan atau rekan kerja agar mau dan dapat bekerja dengan antusias untuk mencapai tujuan organisasi. Cara-cara mempengaruhi melalui memberi petunjuk yang jelas, memotivasi, mendorong, memberi penghargaan, menghimbau, memfasilitasi. (Made Pidarta, 2009:6). Semua ini ditujukan kepada para bawahan atau para pegawai agar rajin bekerja, taat pada peraturan dalam bekerja, berdisiplin.
Yang paling penting dari tugas seorang pemimpin adalah mengendalikan organisasi atau lembaga yang dipimpin agar tetap terselenggara secara dinamis dan stabil.
Kepala sekolah identik dengan kata pendidik ? Padahal sesungguhnya tidak bertugas melakukan pekerjaan mendidik. Mendidik adalah para guru atau tenaga pendidik. Sementara tugas kepala sekolah adalah mengatur dan mengelola sekolah, guru, dan tenaga pendidik ini.
